At CHW, we are big fans of getting out in the fresh air and climbing mountains! Got to have a cheeky Peroni when you get to the top!
It can be an amazing experience for so many reasons and here are just a few of the benefits:
Improved physical fitness: Walking uphill or climbing mountains can provide a great cardiovascular workout and help build strength in the legs and core muscles.
Mental wellbeing: Walking in nature and being surrounded by beautiful scenery can help reduce stress and improve mood.
Increased social opportunities: Hill walking can be a great way to meet new people and form friendships. It's also a great way to talk to people - Talking is an incredible form of self-help therapy.
Sense of achievement: Reaching the top of a hill or mountain can provide a sense of accomplishment and boost confidence.
So what do you need to get started?
Choose a suitable location: Look for hills or mountains that are appropriate for your fitness level and experience. Start with smaller hills and work your way up to more challenging ones.
Wear appropriate clothing and footwear: Dress in layers, wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring a waterproof jacket in case of rain.
Bring essential gear: Bring a map and compass, mobile phone, water, snacks, and a first aid kit.
Learn basic navigation skills: Learn how to read a map and use a compass before setting out. Your phone is a great tool too!
Walk with others: It's safer and more enjoyable to walk with others, especially if you're a beginner.
Start slow: Don't try to walk too far or too fast on your first few walks. Build up gradually over time.
Overall, walking in the hills can be a wonderful experience that offers numerous physical and mental benefits. With the right preparation and approach, it's a great way to get fit, explore nature, and meet new people. Remember, its the start that stops most people.
We are holding a health and wellbeing retreat at Ambleside in the Lake District in April this year. We had an incredible time with a quality group of people and we want to make it even better this year.
We are fully booked this year, but If this is something you are interested in then keep an eye out for 2024!
See you all soon!
Jono.
